Quality inspection in China sourcing means checking whether goods meet agreed requirements during production, before shipment, or at loading. The buyer may inspect directly or hire a third-party inspection company.

Its value is not that it guarantees perfection forever. Its value is that it turns vague quality concerns into photos, samples, defect records, measurements, and a pass or fail conclusion.

The short definition

Inspection means checking goods against agreed standards. Common items include quantity, appearance, dimensions, function, packaging, labels, barcodes, accessories, manuals, color, materials, and safety markings.

Common types include during-production inspection, pre-shipment inspection, container loading supervision, and laboratory testing. For many foreign buyers, pre-shipment inspection is the most practical because it happens before balance payment and before goods leave China.

What AQL means

AQL often appears in sampling inspection. ISO 2859-1:2026 sets out sampling schemes indexed by AQL for lot-by-lot inspection. In simple terms, AQL does not mean every unit is checked . Samples are selected from a batch, and defect counts are used to decide whether the batch meets the acceptance standard.

Term AQL sampling

AQL tables set the sample size and accept or reject numbers from the lot size and the chosen AQL level. The international scheme is ISO 2859-1www.iso.orgwww.iso.org, which China adopts identically as GB/T 2828.1.

This matters. A passed inspection does not mean every unit is perfect. A failed inspection also needs context: defect type, number, severity, and the contract standard.

What an inspection report can prove

A good inspection report can show when and where inspection occurred, which batch was checked, how many samples were selected, what defects were found, what photos were taken, and what conclusion was reached.

In a later dispute, the report can be combined with the PO, PI, contract, samples, chat records, payment records, and logistics records to form an evidence chain .

But the report is only as strong as the standard behind it . If the order lacks clear specifications, sample numbers, defect classifications, and acceptance criteria, the inspector can only judge with limited information.

What inspection cannot guarantee

Inspection may not detect every hidden defect. Problems in long-term use, internal materials, complex electronics, certification compliance, or durability may require laboratory testing or deeper quality control.

Inspection also does not automatically make the supplier liable. If the contract does not address inspection rights, rework duties, reinspection cost, and balance-payment conditions , the supplier may acknowledge the report but reject the consequence you expect.

For non-conforming performance, the injured party may reasonably choose repair, rework, replacement, return, or a price reduction based on the goods and the loss. When to arrange inspection

The most valuable point is usually before balance payment and before shipment . At that time, the goods are finished and the buyer still has payment and shipping leverage.

The buyer must inspect within the agreed period, or promptly, and notify the seller of any non-conformity in time, subject to a two-year outer limit. For complex products, during-production inspection can catch material, process, and schedule issues earlier. Loading supervision can help prevent quantity, carton mark, mixed shipment, and loading-document problems.

The bottom line

Inspection is not insurance, but without inspection, quality disputes are harder to prove. Useful inspection is tied to order specifications, payment milestones, acceptance standards, and breach consequences.
